604 - 12 inch ?

I suppose it's possible the 604 motors have been modified in some way......... maybe the diameter turned down?

Hence my 'harsh' worst case possibility. In this case the horn has no real value either AFAIK.

I went back and read the thread from the beginning, amazing what that can do for clarity sometimes.

If i understand his perspective, which i think is based on facts or the lack thereof in this case, i agree with GM wholeheartedly.

There was never enough information posted about the drivers in question, far too much left to assumption/supposition to base any kind of value on.

"If" they're a simple marriage of unaltered "stock" parts/assemblies, then it'd be safe to assume valuation based on that. But, that's not stated or evidenced anywhere that i could find.

"If" the frames and/or motor assemblies have been machined in any way, it may render them irreversibly altered and unable to any longer assume their original function which could de-value them significantly.

Just my .02 of course.........................

Well, going back to the original picture, it's easy to see that the plated stripe is still present on the motor. Plus the 12" frame is nice and flat. My 417's seem to use the same pot as my 416's. So I really doubt the motors have been modified. Altec speakers just don't use that many different parts that I can see. If the 12" frames were from some other manufacturer I'd be right there with you.

OK, assuming you're right there's still the woofer diaphragm assembly and its potential impact on performance WRT Fs, Vas, Qts that has to be considered. For all we know they may need a custom mix n' match assembly to perform like a mini-604 and if some were made, then what brand(s) and at what level of specs accuracy? Too many variables for me to not maintain a potentially 'harsh' judgment of realistic net worth.

Ok, I see where we are missing each other. I'm speaking only to the parts, not as they interact together. You mentioned scrap value, so I was working off the idea that the 12" would not work, but a potential buyer would still have 604 motors to get rebuilt to proper 15" 604's. That's why I stated that "scrap" seemed harsh to me, since it wouldn't be too difficult to get back to real 604's.

I wouldn't want to put a whole lot of money into the 12" 604 for exactly the reasons you give above...... too many variables.

Agreed.

In particular, i think what many of us would like to know is what combination of parts(cone, coil/former, and suspension) might work acceptably with a 515(604) motor in a 12 inch frame.

Then again, why bother? GPA has the 212 and what appears to be a superior horn.

The looks of that 212 horn worries me. Good for the highs, but doesn't it block a lot of the 12? Looks like trouble. No idea if it makes a difference. Anyone know?
